Water Flow Indicator: The “Smart Sentinel” of the Fire Protection System

Dez 29, 2025

When a sprinkler sprays water, the water flow in the pipes begins to surge. A small device senses the water flow through deflecting blades, converting the mechanical motion into an electrical signal, which precisely illuminates the location of the fire on the control center screen.

Core Function: Precise Conversion from Water Flow to Alarm

A water flow indicator is essentially a water flow sensing and alarm device. Its core task is to achieve efficient and accurate conversion from physical water flow to electronic signals. When a fire occurs, the sprinkler heads activate, and water begins to flow in the pipes. The water flow impacts the blades within the indicator, causing them to deflect in the direction of the water flow. This mechanical motion is transmitted through an internal mechanism (such as a drive shaft), ultimately triggering a microswitch to close, generating an electrical signal. This process is not instantaneous. To avoid false alarms caused by normal water pressure fluctuations in the pipes (e.g., the sudden closure of other water supply points), high-quality modern water flow indicators are generally equipped with a delay function. After the water flow impacts the blades, a delay device (such as an air delay device) is activated. An alarm signal is only issued if the water flow continues after the set delay time (usually within the range of 2-90 seconds). This design greatly improves alarm accuracy.

Application Value: Key to Fire Location and System Monitoring

Water flow indicators play an irreplaceable role as “area locators” in fire protection systems. Its primary value lies in accurately locating fires. Upon receiving the electrical signal from the water flow indicator, the fire control center can immediately identify on the display interface which zone and floor’s water flow indicator was triggered, thus quickly determining the specific area where the fire occurred. This provides crucial information support for the rapid and accurate response of fire rescue forces.Secondly, water flow indicators are a vital link in building an automatic linkage control chain. The signals they emit can be used not only for alarms and displays but also as linkage commands to automatically activate key fire-fighting equipment such as fire pumps.Water flow indicators are suitable for various automatic sprinkler systems, including wet, dry, and pre-action systems, and have a very wide range of applications.

Technical Specifications: Strict Standards for Ensuring Reliability

To ensure the reliability of water flow indicators during critical moments, their design, production, and use must adhere to strict technical specifications. The Chinese national mandatory standard GB 5135.7-2018 clearly defines their classification, models, technical requirements, and test methods. This standard sets a unified baseline for the performance and quality of water flow indicators. In practical applications, the installation of water flow indicators has strict technical requirements. It can only be installed after the pipeline has passed pressure testing and flushing, and its electrical components should be installed vertically above the horizontal pipeline, with their direction of operation consistent with the water flow direction.Furthermore, to facilitate daily inspection and maintenance, the specification requires that when a control valve is installed before the water flow indicator inlet, a signal valve with signal feedback function must be used. This way, if the valve is accidentally closed, the control center can be notified immediately, ensuring the system is always in a standby state.Back in the fire control room, when the indicator light representing a floor or zone changes from green to red and begins to flash, it’s more than just a change in signal. Behind this lies a sophisticated machine that captures changes in the flow of tens of liters of water per second within the pipes and transmits the precise location of danger to humans via circuitry.

The water flow indicator is silently installed on the pipes, remaining motionless most of the time. But it is precisely this silent steadfastness that provides the first clear location alarm during the golden hours when a fire first breaks out.
