When flames begin to rise on warehouse shelves, a special sprinkler can activate within seconds, extinguishing the fire in its infancy with a flow rate of hundreds of liters per minute.
ESFR sprinklers are specifically designed for high-fire-risk warehouses. Through a specially designed splash plate, they create high-energy, large-diameter water droplets that can directly penetrate the rising hot airflow and flames, reaching the surface of the burning material for cooling and extinguishing the fire.
Working Principle
The Early Suppression Fast Response sprinkler, or ESFR sprinkler for short, is an automatic fire suppression device designed specifically for high-fire-risk environments. Its most significant feature is its dual extinguishing mechanism: it not only cools the hot air generated by the fire but also allows the high-energy water droplets formed by the special splash plate to directly penetrate the flames and cool the burning object itself. The response time index of the ESFR sprinkler is no higher than 28 ± 8 (m·s)^0.5, meaning it reacts more than 30% faster than ordinary sprinklers.
Core Advantages
Compared to traditional fire-control sprinklers, ESFR sprinklers are active fire suppression sprinklers. Traditional sprinklers primarily spray at a certain intensity within a limited area, wetting surrounding items, but often only playing a control role in large fires. ESFR sprinklers, however, are different. They feature high flow rate and high response speed, spraying a large amount of high-energy water directly into the fire scene in the early stages of a fire, achieving effective early fire suppression. The flow coefficient of ESFR sprinklers is typically K=161, 202, or 242, far higher than that of ordinary sprinklers. The high flow rate design allows it to release more water per unit time, resulting in a stronger fire suppression capability.
Applicable Scenarios
ESFR sprinklers are mainly used in high-fire-risk storage environments. According to national standards, they are particularly suitable for high-stacking warehouses with a clearance height not exceeding 13.5 meters. Specifically, ESFR sprinklers can effectively protect pallet warehouses with a stacking height not exceeding 10.7 meters and single-row rack warehouses with a clearance height not exceeding 12.2 meters. For storage spaces containing high-risk goods such as Group A plastic products, and in locations where it is impossible to install built-in sprinklers on shelves, ESFR sprinklers demonstrate unique protective advantages.
Professional Standards
In China, the production and use of ESFR sprinklers must adhere to strict national standards. The GB5135.9 standard specifically specifies the technical requirements, test methods, and inspection rules for early suppression fast-response sprinklers. In system design, ESFR sprinkler systems must meet the requirements of an effective area of not less than 300 square meters and a continuous spray time of at least one hour. It is important to note that ESFR sprinklers are only suitable for wet systems. If incorrectly used in dry or pre-action systems, the fire extinguishing efficiency will be severely reduced due to delayed water filling in the pipeline. ESFR sprinkler systems have been widely adopted in actual projects such as high-stacking warehouses in petrochemical enterprises. Through analysis of existing standards and engineering examples, technicians continuously optimize their design schemes.
With the continuous improvement of the Chinese national standard GB5135.9, this highly efficient fire extinguishing technology is playing an increasingly important role in various high-fire-risk storage locations, becoming a reliable barrier to protect property and reduce fire losses.
