Critical Pressure Relief Valves in Fire Protection Systems

Pressure relief valves are the most important safety devices in fire fighting system. They help prevent potentially disastrous overpressure problems. The fire pump relief valve (or fire pump pressure relief valve) keeps pumps safe by rerouting the extra pressure in case of an emergency shut-down or a change in the flow. The fire sprinkler pressure relief valve is also doing the same thing by protecting the sensitive sprinkler piping system from the effect of a pressure surge.

For a multistage fire pump, the casing relief valve for fire pump will also be specialized in that case, as it is the one that prevents the internal pressure of the case from increasing. The result is a set of valves that can regulate the supply of gas which is programmed to shift from the source to the consumer. System integrity is maintained when the valves are automatically released as the pressure set point is exceeded. These are some of the critical components of the fire and the electric codes that should be tested regularly. The testing of these components should be in compliance with the fire equipment manufacturers and NFPA.
